Overview
Anand Vihar is a densely connected neighbourhood in east Delhi, straddling the boundary between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. It is best known to travellers as one of the city's most important transport nodes: the Anand Vihar Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT) dispatches buses to Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and other northern states, while Anand Vihar Railway Terminal handles a substantial volume of long-distance trains. The area also has its own Delhi Metro station on the Pink Line (Line 8), making onward connections straightforward.
The neighbourhood itself is dense, commercial and utilitarian. Residential colonies, street-food stalls, auto-rickshaw stands and small shops crowd the streets around the terminal. It is not a leisure destination in the conventional sense, but it serves a very practical purpose for travellers routing through Delhi to hill stations, pilgrimage sites or Uttar Pradesh cities.
For most visitors, Anand Vihar is the starting or ending point of a longer journey rather than a destination. That said, understanding how it works — which terminal handles which routes, where the metro connects — can save considerable time and stress.
Before You Go
Visa
India requires a visa for most foreign nationals. For up-to-date requirements, check the TravelerPulse Visas section and the official website of the Indian Bureau of Immigration. Do not rely on third-party summaries for current rules.
Practical Preparation
- Book intercity bus tickets in advance during festive seasons (Diwali, Holi, Dussehra) and summer school holidays, when buses and trains fill quickly. The Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC) and Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) both offer online booking; verify current booking methods on their official sites.
- Train tickets should ideally be booked via the Indian Railways official platform (IRCTC) well before travel, particularly in AC classes.
- Air quality in Delhi can be severe between November and February. Travellers with respiratory conditions should monitor AQI forecasts and carry appropriate masks.
- Cash is useful for auto-rickshaws, small eateries and luggage porters around the terminal. ATMs are available in the area; verify availability on arrival.
Getting There
By Air
Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is the nearest airport, located roughly 25–30 km west of Anand Vihar depending on the route. The Delhi Metro Airport Express Line connects the airport to New Delhi station, from where travellers can switch to other metro lines to reach Anand Vihar. Taxis and app-based cabs (Ola, Uber) are available from the airport; journey time varies significantly with traffic.
By Train
Anand Vihar Railway Terminal (station code ANVT) is a dedicated terminus handling dozens of departures, particularly to eastern UP, Bihar and beyond. It is distinct from Delhi Junction (Old Delhi) and Hazrat Nizamuddin — confirm which station your specific train uses when booking.
By Metro
The Anand Vihar Metro Station on the Pink Line (Line 8) is the most convenient metro connection for the ISBT and surrounding area. It links to Karkarduma on the Blue Line, enabling connections across the city without changing to road transport.
By Road
Anand Vihar ISBT is one of three major ISBTs in Delhi (alongside Kashmere Gate and Sarai Kale Khan). State-run and private buses from Uttarakhand, UP, Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring states terminate and originate here. The terminal can be reached by metro, auto-rickshaw or taxi from elsewhere in Delhi.
Getting Around
Within the immediate Anand Vihar area, auto-rickshaws are the dominant short-distance mode. Negotiate the fare before boarding or insist on the meter; fares to nearby areas such as Karkarduma, Patparganj or Mayur Vihar are short. App-based cab services (Ola, Uber) operate here and are useful for fixed, pre-agreed fares to distant parts of Delhi.
The Delhi Metro is the most reliable way to travel further afield. From Anand Vihar, the Pink Line runs in both directions across east Delhi and connects to interchange stations for the Blue, Red and Yellow Lines. Tokens and smart cards are available at all metro stations; smart cards offer a small per-ride discount and reduce queue time.
E-rickshaws (battery-powered three-wheelers) fill short gaps between the metro station, ISBT and nearby residential blocks. They are inexpensive but can be slow in congested lanes. Standard cycle-rickshaws are also present for very short hops.
Where to Stay
Anand Vihar has a selection of budget and mid-range hotels and guesthouses clustered near the ISBT and along Vikas Marg, catering mainly to transit travellers. Standards vary considerably; reading recent guest reviews on a reputable booking platform before reserving is strongly advisable.
Travellers who prefer more choice in accommodation — including international hotel brands — may consider staying in areas such as Connaught Place, Karol Bagh, or along the Noida corridor, all accessible by metro. These areas offer a wider range of options at various price points while still allowing easy travel back to Anand Vihar for early-morning bus or train departures.
If you are departing on a very early bus or train (before metro services begin), staying in a guesthouse within walking distance of the ISBT or railway terminal is worth considering to avoid the complexity of arranging transport at 4–5 am.
Things to See & Do
Anand Vihar is not an attractions-focused destination. Most travellers spend time here waiting for connections, which means the area's practical offerings — eateries, small shops and nearby transit infrastructure — are more relevant than sightseeing.
That said, the neighbourhood is adjacent to several parts of east Delhi that do offer more to explore. Akshardham Temple, one of Delhi's most visited landmarks, is a short metro ride away and merits a half-day visit. The nearby area of Mayur Vihar has parks and local markets that give a sense of everyday Delhi life away from the tourist circuit.
If time allows between connections, Preet Vihar and Karkarduma offer small commercial markets and local cafés where travellers can rest without the intensity of the terminal itself.
Food & Drink
Street food around Anand Vihar ISBT and the railway terminal is abundant and inexpensive. Look for chole bhature, parathas, samosas and chai at stalls near the bus bays — these are popular with commuters and generally fresh due to high turnover. As with street food anywhere, exercise standard hygiene judgment: prefer stalls that cook to order and have visible customer volume.
Dhaba-style restaurants (basic sit-down eateries serving North Indian meals) are scattered throughout the area and offer filling thalis — a set meal with rice, dal, vegetables and bread — at budget prices. Prices and menus are typically displayed inside; verify before ordering if you have dietary requirements.
More polished cafés and fast-food chains are available along Vikas Marg and in the nearby Karkarduma commercial area. The Anand Vihar metro station vicinity has a handful of quick-service options suitable for a brief layover. Packaged water bottles are widely sold; drinking tap water is not recommended for visitors not accustomed to it.
Practical Information
Luggage
Basic left-luggage facilities may be available at Anand Vihar Railway Terminal; verify availability and current rates on arrival. The ISBT does not reliably offer long-term luggage storage — confirm locally before depending on it.
Connectivity
SIM cards for Indian networks can be purchased at outlets near the terminal; foreign nationals need to present a passport and a local contact address. Wi-Fi is available at the metro station. Free public Wi-Fi quality varies.
Money
ATMs from major banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI and others) are present in the area. Have some cash on hand for auto-rickshaws and small purchases.
Emergency Numbers
- Police: 100
- Ambulance: 108
- Fire: 101
- Women's helpline (national): 1091
Health
A few pharmacies operate near the terminal. For anything beyond minor issues, the nearest well-equipped hospitals are in areas such as IP Extension and Patparganj — verify exact locations and hours locally or through your accommodation.
Safety
Anand Vihar is busy and can feel chaotic, especially around the ISBT during peak hours. The area is generally safe during daylight, though the usual precautions for a crowded urban transit zone apply: keep bags in front of you, be aware of your surroundings and do not leave luggage unattended.
Be alert to touting near the bus terminal — individuals may approach offering 'better' buses, hotels or tours. Use only officially designated bus bays and purchase tickets from authorised counters or official apps. Similarly, at the railway terminal, purchase tickets only through official channels (IRCTC online or station counters) to avoid fraud.
Night-time movement around the ISBT should be approached with more caution. If arriving late at night on an intercity bus, have your onward accommodation address and contact number ready, use a reputable app-based cab rather than negotiating at the roadside, and stay in well-lit, populated areas of the terminal until your ride is confirmed.
