Overview
Gorumara National Park is a compact but ecologically rich protected area in the Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, India — not Sri Lanka. It sits within the Dooars, the broad floodplain foothills at the base of the eastern Himalayas, threaded by the Murti, Rydak, Jaldhaka, and Torsa rivers.
Established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1949 and elevated to national park status in 1994, Gorumara covers roughly 80 sq km of grassland, riverine forest, and sal woodland. It is most celebrated for its population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses (Rhinoceros unicornis), which were reintroduced here and have since stabilised into a healthy breeding group.
The park sits at a lower elevation than the better-known Himalayan parks, making it accessible from destinations like Siliguri, Darjeeling, and Kalimpong. Despite its modest size relative to Kaziranga, Gorumara offers intimate, less-crowded wildlife encounters that experienced travellers often prefer.

Getting There
By Air
Bagdogra Airport (IXB), near Siliguri, is the most convenient airport — approximately 65–75 km from Gorumara depending on your route. It receives flights from Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, and other major Indian cities. Taxi and shared-cab services operate from the airport toward the Dooars; confirm current options and fares locally.
By Rail
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) junction is the major railhead, well-connected to Kolkata, Delhi, and northeastern cities. From NJP, road transport to Chalsa or Lataguri (the main gateway villages for Gorumara) takes roughly 2–3 hours depending on traffic. Smaller stations at Mal Junction or Chalsa also serve the area on narrower-gauge or metre-gauge lines — verify current services.
By Road
State and private buses connect Siliguri to Jalpaiguri and onward into the Dooars. Private taxis offer a more comfortable and direct option. Lataguri village is widely used as a base and is the point of access to the park's main watch towers and safari zones.
Getting Around
Within Gorumara, wildlife viewing is primarily conducted by jeep safari with a trained Forest Department guide. Self-driving through the core zone is not permitted. Safari permits must be booked — often online through the West Bengal Forest Department portal or at the gate — and slots can fill quickly during peak season (November–February).
Watch towers (machans) such as Jatraprasad, Rhino, Medla, and Chukchuki offer stationary observation points where rangers conduct guided viewing sessions, typically at dawn and dusk. These are distinct from jeep safaris and are usually booked separately; verify current operating procedures locally.
Between Lataguri and nearby villages, auto-rickshaws and local taxis are available. Walking outside designated areas without a guide is not recommended given the presence of wild elephants, rhinos, and bison.
Where to Stay
Lataguri is the primary accommodation hub, offering a range of forest lodges, eco-resorts, and guesthouses in different price brackets. West Bengal Forest Development Corporation (WBFDC) operates nature camps and bungalows within or adjacent to the forest — these are popular and book up well in advance during peak season; verify availability and booking procedures on the official WBFDC portal.
Private resorts and homestays also operate in and around Lataguri, Chalsa, and Murti. Standards and pricing vary; read recent traveller reviews and confirm inclusions before booking. Accommodation with safari packages is common, but ensure the package uses authorised Forest Department jeeps and guides.
There is no large commercial hotel strip here — accommodation is modest and nature-focused, which is part of the appeal. Advance booking for November through February is strongly advised.
Things to See & Do
Wildlife Safaris
Jeep safaris through the forest buffer and core zones are the central activity. Early morning departures offer the best chance of spotting rhinos, gaur (Indian bison), Asian elephants, spotted deer, and various bird species. Leopards are present but seldom seen.
Watch Tower Visits
Elevated machans allow quiet, stationary observation of animals at salt licks and clearings. The Rhino and Jatraprasad towers are particularly well regarded. Sessions typically run at dawn and dusk.
Birdwatching
Gorumara and the surrounding Dooars are excellent for birdwatching, with species including great hornbill, crested serpent eagle, jungle fowl, kingfishers, and various warblers. The riverine edges are especially productive.
Murti River
The Murti River runs along the park's edge and the riverside setting is pleasant for quiet walks in designated areas. River fishing (with appropriate permits) is practiced locally.
Day Trips to Nearby Forests
The Dooars holds several adjoining reserves — Chapramari Wildlife Sanctuary and Jaldapara National Park are within a few hours' drive and can be combined into a broader Dooars itinerary.
Food & Drink
Most resorts and lodges in Lataguri serve meals as part of their packages, typically Bengali cuisine alongside basic Indian staples. Dal, rice, fish curries, and vegetable dishes are standard. Meat options are available in most guesthouses.
Local dhabas (roadside eateries) in Chalsa and Lataguri serve simple, inexpensive meals. Do not expect international cuisine or fine dining — the area is rural and facilities are functional rather than elaborate.
Drinking water from taps is not reliably safe; use sealed bottled water or a certified filter throughout your stay. Alcohol is available in some resorts; availability in local shops varies — verify locally.

Mobile network coverage is available in Lataguri and Chalsa, though signals can be weak inside the forest. Download offline maps and park information before arrival.

Do not approach, feed, or attempt to photograph wildlife from dangerously close distances. Elephants in particular can be unpredictable and are responsible for a number of incidents in the Dooars annually.
Leeches are prevalent during and after the monsoon transition period (October–November). Wear leech socks or tuck trousers into socks when walking in forest areas. Snakes, including venomous species, are present — watch where you step, especially at night.
