Overview
Commerce is a small, predominantly industrial city in Los Angeles County, California, incorporated in 1960. It sits roughly 5 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles and covers only about 6.6 square miles. Despite its compact size, it punches above its weight economically: the city is home to one of the largest concentrations of warehouses, distribution centers, and light manufacturing facilities in Southern California.
The resident population is relatively small — a few thousand people — but the daytime workforce swells significantly because of the commercial activity that defines the city. Commerce is also one of the few cities in Los Angeles County to operate a tribal gaming casino, the Bicycle Hotel & Casino, which draws visitors from across the region.
For travelers, Commerce functions best as a practical stopover: it has solid freeway access, a handful of lodging options, dining choices largely geared toward working locals, and proximity to a major shopping outlet. Visitors primarily come for the casino, the Citadel Outlets, or as a convenient base for exploring greater Los Angeles.
Before You Go
Entry Requirements
Commerce is a U.S. city. Entry requirements are those of the United States federal government. For visa and entry information, check TravelerPulse's Visas section and the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection website (cbp.gov).
Climate
Commerce shares the broader Los Angeles Basin climate: warm, dry summers and mild, occasionally rainy winters. Summer temperatures typically reach the mid-to-upper 80s°F (around 30°C), while winter lows can dip into the 40s°F (around 5–8°C). June Gloom — a marine layer that keeps mornings overcast — is common May through July.
What to Pack
- Light layers year-round; evenings can be cool even in summer
- Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, hat) for outdoor time
- Comfortable walking shoes
- A car or ride-share plan — the area is car-oriented
Getting There
By Air
The most practical airport for Commerce is Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), roughly 20–25 miles west depending on traffic. Long Beach Airport (LGB) is a closer alternative, approximately 15 miles south, and is served by several domestic carriers. Bob Hope Airport in Burbank (BUR) is also reachable but involves more freeway distance.
By Car
Commerce sits at the intersection of major freeways: the I-5 (Santa Ana Freeway), I-710 (Long Beach Freeway), and the 60 Freeway all pass through or near the city. Driving is the most practical way to arrive and move around. Traffic congestion on these routes is significant during peak hours — plan accordingly.
By Public Transit
Metro Bus serves Commerce, and the city connects to the broader LA Metro network. The closest Metro Rail stations are on the Gold/A Line and Silver/J Line corridors in adjacent cities. Verify current routes and schedules at metro.net before travel, as service changes occur. Commerce Shuttle (operated by the city) provides some local circulation — confirm availability locally.
Getting Around
Commerce is a car-dependent city. Most points of interest — the Citadel Outlets, Bicycle Hotel & Casino, and the small downtown district — are spread out along arterial roads. Ride-share services (Uber, Lyft) are widely available given the proximity to Los Angeles.
Walking is feasible within specific complexes like the Citadel Outlets but is not practical for moving between attractions. Cyclists should be aware that the area is industrial and not particularly bike-friendly, though broader LA County bike infrastructure continues to expand.
If you are staying at a hotel and visiting the casino or outlets, confirm whether a shuttle is offered — verify directly with the property.
Things to See & Do
Citadel Outlets
The Citadel Outlets is Commerce's most prominent retail and visitor destination. Built within and around the walls of a former 1920s Assyrian-style tire factory, it is an open-air outlet mall featuring a broad range of fashion, home goods, and accessory brands. The distinctive architectural facade is itself worth noting. Verify current tenant listings, hours, and any seasonal events at citadeloutlets.com.
Bicycle Hotel & Casino
The Bicycle Hotel & Casino (commonly called 'The Bike') is one of the largest card clubs in California. California law permits card games but not Nevada-style slot machines, so the gaming experience here is poker- and table-card-game focused. The property also has a hotel, several dining options, and periodic entertainment events. Verify current hours, game offerings, and age requirements (must be 21+) directly with the venue.
Nearby Parks and Green Space
Commerce itself has limited parkland, but the city maintains a few local recreational facilities for residents. For more extensive outdoor activities, nearby Whittier Narrows Recreation Area in adjacent South El Monte offers trails, wildlife viewing, and open space along the San Gabriel River — verify access and hours locally.
Food & Drink
Commerce's dining scene reflects its working-class industrial character and its significant Latino community. Taquerias, Mexican bakeries (panaderías), and casual lunch spots catering to warehouse and distribution workers are common along Washington Boulevard and nearby arterials. Quality can be high at these unpretentious spots.
The Bicycle Hotel & Casino has multiple on-site dining outlets ranging from casual to sit-down formats — convenient for guests. The Citadel Outlets also has a food court and some branded restaurant tenants.
For a wider range of cuisines — Korean BBQ, Japanese, Vietnamese, upscale dining — the broader Los Angeles metro is very accessible. East Los Angeles and Montebello, both neighboring areas, offer additional dining diversity within a short drive.
- Tip: Washington Boulevard is the main local dining strip; explore it for affordable, locally rooted food options.
- Alcohol is served at casino dining venues and many restaurants. California has no unusual alcohol service restrictions beyond standard U.S. norms.
Shopping
The Citadel Outlets is the primary shopping draw in Commerce, offering outlet-priced merchandise from a wide range of national and international brands. It is popular with both locals and international visitors, particularly given LA's large tourism base.
Beyond the Citadel, Commerce's commercial streets have discount stores, auto parts shops, and wholesale suppliers — these cater primarily to local residents and businesses rather than leisure shoppers.
For luxury retail, specialty boutiques, or farmers markets, travelers should venture into Los Angeles proper — Beverly Hills, Melrose, or the Farmers Market at Third and Fairfax are all within reasonable driving distance.
Practical Information
Money
Major credit and debit cards are accepted nearly everywhere in Commerce. ATMs are available at the casino, the Citadel Outlets, and bank branches. Tipping is standard practice in the U.S.: 18–20% at sit-down restaurants is customary; tip jars are common at counter-service spots.
Connectivity
Cellular service (all major U.S. carriers) is reliable throughout Commerce. Free Wi-Fi is available at the Citadel Outlets and the casino property. International travelers should verify roaming plans or consider a local SIM.
Emergency Services
In any emergency in the United States, dial 911 for police, fire, or ambulance. Commerce contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for law enforcement services.
Health
Pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens) are present in the area. For non-emergency medical care, urgent care clinics operate in neighboring cities — verify locations locally. The nearest hospital emergency departments are in adjacent communities; confirm the closest facility before your visit.
Safety
Commerce is an industrial city and, like many parts of the Los Angeles metro area, requires standard urban awareness. The Citadel Outlets and Bicycle Casino are well-managed, well-lit commercial environments with security staff present.
Industrial zones outside of the main commercial corridors can feel isolated, particularly at night. Stick to main roads and well-trafficked areas after dark. Keep valuables out of sight in parked vehicles — vehicle break-ins are a documented issue across LA County.
Overall, Commerce does not present unusual safety concerns for travelers who take routine precautions. Check current local advisories via the LA County Sheriff's Department or the City of Commerce's official website before your trip.
