Overview
Descanso Gardens is a 150-acre public botanical garden tucked into the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains in La Cañada Flintridge, a small city in Los Angeles County. Originally developed on land that was part of Rancho La Cañada, the property was shaped into a private estate by newspaper publisher E. Manchester Boddy beginning in the 1930s before Los Angeles County acquired it in 1953.
The garden is organized into distinct themed areas — a native oak woodland, a Japanese Garden with a traditional teahouse and koi pond, an International Rosarium holding thousands of rose varieties, a camellia forest, a lilac collection, and seasonal display gardens. The mature coast live oaks (some centuries old) that anchor the landscape are among its most distinctive features and give the grounds a sense of natural scale rarely found in urban botanical gardens.
Because it sits within a metropolitan region of roughly 10 million people, Descanso Gardens serves as both a serious horticultural institution and a beloved community green space. It is managed by the Descanso Gardens Guild and Los Angeles County, and programming includes guided tram tours, horticultural education events, and a popular annual winter light installation called ENCHANTED: Forest of Light.
Before You Go
Admission and Tickets
Descanso Gardens charges admission for adults, with reduced rates typically available for seniors, children, and Los Angeles County residents. Membership programs offer unlimited visits. Verify current prices and any timed-entry reservation requirements on the official site at descansogardens.org before arriving, as ticketing policies have changed periodically.
When to Visit
The garden has something to see in every season, but the camellia forest — one of the largest in North America — peaks roughly from January through March. Roses are at their best in April and May and again in September and October. Summer visits are pleasant in the shaded oak woodland, though the garden can be warm midday. The ENCHANTED light event runs in winter evenings and requires a separate ticket; it sells out in advance.
What to Bring
- Comfortable walking shoes; paths include some uneven terrain
- Water bottle; a café on site sells refreshments but bringing your own is sensible
- Camera or phone — photography for personal use is generally permitted, but commercial and event photography requires advance permits
- Sun protection for open garden areas in warmer months
Accessibility
Paved and compacted-gravel paths cover most of the garden, and the grounds are largely wheelchair accessible. A limited number of mobility devices are available to borrow; verify availability with staff in advance.
Getting There
By Car
Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge, CA 91011. It is easily reached via the 2 Freeway (Glendale Freeway) or the 210 Freeway (Foothill Freeway). On-site parking is available; a parking fee typically applies. On busy weekend days and during special events, the lot can fill early.
By Public Transit
La Cañada Flintridge is not served by the Los Angeles Metro rail network. Bus service is available via Foothill Transit and LADOT Commuter Express routes connecting to nearby Glendale and Pasadena, but service frequency and stop proximity vary. Confirm current routes and schedules on the LA Metro Trip Planner or the individual agency websites before planning a transit visit.
By Rideshare
Rideshare drop-off at the garden entrance is practical and commonly used, particularly for visitors coming from Pasadena, Glendale, or central Los Angeles. Return pickup may take a few minutes given the suburban location, so factor that into timing.

Key Areas of the Garden
- Camellia Forest: Over 600 varieties planted beneath a canopy of oaks; one of the most significant camellia collections in the United States

- Lilac Collection: Best visited in early spring when fragrance is at its peak
- Children's Discovery Garden: An interactive area oriented toward younger visitors
Tram Tours
Narrated tram tours run on a regular schedule and are a good option for first-time visitors or those who want context before exploring on foot. Tram availability and schedules change seasonally; verify on the official site.
Special Events
Descanso programs concerts, plant sales, photography evenings, and horticultural workshops throughout the year. The ENCHANTED: Forest of Light winter installation is the highest-profile seasonal event and requires advance ticket purchase.
Filming and Photography
The garden's mix of oak woodland, Japanese architecture, and formal rose beds has made it a recurring location for film and television productions. Visitors will recognize it from various period dramas and commercials. Personal photography is freely enjoyed throughout.
Food & Drink
On Site
The Maple Terrace Café (verify current name and hours on the official site) offers casual daytime dining including sandwiches, salads, and drinks. The café is popular on weekends, and seating can be limited during peak visits. Outside food is generally welcome in designated picnic areas.
Nearby Dining
La Cañada Flintridge's Foothill Boulevard corridor has a modest selection of restaurants covering American, Italian, and Asian cuisines. For a broader range of options, Pasadena (roughly 10–15 minutes by car) offers extensive dining from casual to upscale, particularly along Colorado Boulevard and in Old Pasadena. Glendale, also nearby, has a particularly strong Armenian and Middle Eastern dining scene.

Nearby Services
Gas stations, pharmacies, and grocery stores are available along Foothill Boulevard in La Cañada Flintridge and in adjacent Montrose (a neighborhood of Glendale). The nearest hospital with emergency services is in Glendale or Pasadena; verify locally for the closest facility to your needs.
Safety
Descanso Gardens is a low-risk, family-oriented destination within a generally safe suburban area. Standard urban precautions apply: do not leave valuables visible in parked vehicles, and keep bags with you at all times.
The garden backs up to natural hillside terrain. During periods of high fire danger — common in summer and fall in the San Gabriel foothills — monitor local advisories. On hot days, the shaded oak woodland is the most comfortable part of the grounds; hydrate regularly.
