Overview
Disneyland Resort sits in Anaheim, Orange County, about 35 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles. Walt Disney opened the original Disneyland park on July 17, 1955, making it the oldest Disney theme park in the world and the only one Walt personally oversaw. Today the resort encompasses two theme parks, a shopping and dining district (Downtown Disney), and several on-site hotels.
Disneyland Park is organized into themed lands — Main Street U.S.A., Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, Tomorrowland, and others — each with rides, shows, and character experiences that range from gentle family attractions to high-intensity thrill rides. Disney California Adventure (DCA), which opened in 2001 and has been significantly expanded since, celebrates California's culture and history alongside Marvel, Pixar, and Disney storytelling, and is home to the popular Radiator Springs Racers and Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT!
The resort draws tens of millions of visitors annually and is one of the most-visited theme park destinations in the world. Its compact footprint compared with Walt Disney World in Florida means guests can realistically experience both parks in a multi-day visit without extensive transit between them.
Anaheim itself is a mid-size Southern California city with a full range of hotels, restaurants, and services beyond the resort perimeter, giving visitors options at many price points.
Before You Go
Tickets and Park Reservations
Disneyland uses a date-based ticketing system. As of recent years, most tickets require guests to select a specific park for entry on each day. Confirm the current reservation and ticket policy on the official Disneyland website (disneyland.disney.go.com) before purchasing, as policies change. Park-hopping options that allow movement between both parks on the same day may be available — verify current restrictions and hours for that feature.
Purchase tickets directly from Disney or authorized resellers to avoid counterfeit or inflated-price tickets. Unofficial third-party sellers carry risk.
Visas
Entry requirements depend on your nationality and travel history. For general context, visit TravelerPulse's Visas section and cross-reference the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website (cbp.gov) and the U.S. Department of State travel portal (travel.state.gov). Do not rely on this guide for specific visa rules.
What to Bring
- Comfortable, broken-in walking shoes — expect to walk many miles per day
- Layers: parks can be warm midday and cool at night, especially in cooler months
- A portable phone charger; the official Disneyland app is essential for wait times, mobile food ordering, and the Lightning Lane system
- Reusable water bottle (refill stations are available throughout both parks)
- Sunscreen
Accessibility
Disneyland Resort publishes a detailed Accessibility Guide on its website covering attraction accommodations, Disability Access Service (DAS), quiet rooms, and mobility aid rental. Review this before your visit if relevant.
Getting There
By Air
The closest airport is John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Santa Ana, approximately 15 miles from the resort. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is roughly 35 miles away and offers the widest range of flights, though ground travel time varies significantly with traffic. Long Beach Airport (LGB) is another regional option.
Ground Transportation from Airports
Shuttle and rideshare services (Uber, Lyft) operate from all three airports to the resort. Verify current shuttle providers and pricing locally or on the official resort site, as operators change. Rental cars are available at each airport; parking is available at the Disneyland Resort parking structure (fees apply — check the official site for current rates).
By Car
The resort is accessible via Interstate 5 (the Santa Ana Freeway) at the Disney Way/Katella Avenue exits in Anaheim. On-site parking is available in the Mickey and Friends parking structure and Pixar Pals parking area. Traffic on I-5 can be severe during peak commute hours and on busy park days — build extra time into your plans.
By Train
Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink commuter rail serve the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC), located about 2 miles from the resort. From ARTIC, the Anaheim Resort Transportation (ART) bus service connects to the park gates — verify current routes and schedules with ART directly.
Getting Around
The two parks and Downtown Disney are walkable from each other once you are on resort property. A complimentary monorail connects a station inside Disneyland Park to Downtown Disney (verify current operational status, as it has undergone extended maintenance periods). A Disneyland Railroad circumnavigates Disneyland Park and is both a convenient transport option and an attraction in its own right.
On-site Disney hotels offer walking paths or shuttle connections to the parks. Off-site hotels within about a mile frequently offer their own shuttles — confirm with your hotel before arrival.
For guests driving in, the parking structure is connected to the park entry plaza by tram service. Within Anaheim more broadly, rideshare apps and the ART bus system are the most practical options for reaching nearby restaurants or attractions outside the resort.
Where to Stay
On-Site Disney Hotels
Three hotels are owned and operated by Disney on or adjacent to resort property: the Disneyland Hotel, the Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, and Disney's Paradise Pier Hotel (which was being repositioned as of recent updates — verify current status). Staying on-site provides benefits including early theme park entry on select days and walking-distance access to the parks; confirm current benefits when booking.
The Grand Californian is the most upscale option and has a direct entrance into Disney California Adventure. It books out far in advance, particularly on weekends and during busy seasons.
Off-Site Hotels
Anaheim's Harbor Boulevard and the surrounding streets host dozens of hotels at a wide range of price points, from budget motels to full-service properties. Many are within walking distance or a short shuttle ride of the resort. Review proximity, shuttle availability, and current guest feedback when selecting an off-site option. Prices rise substantially on busy park weekends and during school holiday periods.
Verify current rates and availability on official hotel sites or reputable booking platforms — this guide does not quote specific prices.

Lightning Lane and Virtual Queues
Disneyland uses a paid Lightning Lane system (individual and multi-pass tiers) and, for select very high-demand attractions, virtual queues that must be joined via the app. Understanding these systems before arrival will significantly affect your day — review the current structure on the official site, as it changes periodically.
Entertainment and Characters
Scheduled parades, live shows, and character meet-and-greets run throughout the day; specific offerings rotate seasonally. The Disneyland app displays daily schedules. Special seasonal events (such as Halloween Time and the winter holiday overlay) run on select dates and may require separate ticket purchases.
Food & Drink
Both parks offer a wide range of dining, from quick-service counter locations to table-service restaurants. Advanced dining reservations for popular sit-down restaurants are strongly recommended and can typically be made 60 days in advance through the Disneyland website or app.
Notable Dining Options
- Blue Bayou Restaurant (Disneyland Park) — a sit-down Creole-inspired restaurant set inside the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction; a classic and frequently fully booked destination
- Carthay Circle Restaurant (DCA) — table-service dining in a landmark building at the entrance to DCA
- Oga's Cantina (Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge) — a themed bar offering alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks in an immersive setting; reservations are highly competitive
- Lamplight Lounge (DCA, Pixar Pier) — a casual sit-down option with waterfront views
- Various quick-service options are distributed throughout both parks, including themed offerings in most lands
Food allergies and dietary restrictions are taken seriously; speak with a chef or check the allergy-friendly menu options available at most dining locations.
Downtown Disney, the outdoor shopping and dining district between the parks and hotels, offers additional restaurant choices and can be accessed without a park ticket. Verify current hours and tenant listings, as the district has been undergoing renovation.
Shopping
Merchandise is woven throughout both parks, with land-specific shops selling themed goods — lightsabers and droids in Galaxy's Edge, Pixar-themed items in California Adventure, and classic Disney character merchandise throughout Disneyland Park. The World of Disney store in Downtown Disney is one of the largest Disney merchandise locations outside of Walt Disney World and can be accessed without a park ticket.
Custom experiences such as build-your-own lightsabers (Savi's Workshop, reservation required) and custom droids (Droid Depot) are popular but have limited availability and an additional cost — reserve in advance.
Many popular items sell out quickly. For items you definitely want, purchase them early in your visit rather than planning to return at the end of the day.
Practical Information
Hours
Park hours vary by day, season, and special events. Always check the official Disneyland app or website for current hours before your visit. Hours can extend significantly on busy days or during special parties.

Safety
Disneyland Resort is a heavily staffed, security-screened environment. Bag checks are conducted at park entrances. Security personnel and cast members are present throughout both parks.
Height and health restrictions apply to several attractions. Signs at each attraction entrance list restrictions; guests with heart conditions, pregnancy, or other health considerations should review these carefully. The resort's website also lists restrictions per attraction.
Anaheim is a large urban area surrounding the resort. The immediate resort perimeter is well-lit and staffed, but exercise normal urban awareness when moving through off-site areas, particularly late at night. Keep an eye on belongings in crowded situations.
Heat and sun exposure can be significant, especially May through September. Stay hydrated — free water is available at many quick-service locations — and take breaks in air-conditioned spaces during the hottest part of the day.
