Overview
El Segundo is a small coastal city of roughly 17,000 residents situated on the Santa Monica Bay in Los Angeles County, bordered by Manhattan Beach to the south, Hawthorne to the east, and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to the north. Its name — Spanish for "The Second" — refers to the Standard Oil refinery that was the second built by the company on the West Coast, opened in 1911 and still operated by Chevron today.
Despite its modest size, El Segundo punches above its weight economically. It is home to a significant cluster of aerospace, defense, and technology companies — including Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, and numerous smaller firms — making it one of the denser concentrations of aerospace employment in the United States. The Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers NFL teams have training facilities here.
For travelers, El Segundo offers a quieter, more walkable alternative to the busier South Bay beach cities. Main Street runs through a genuinely local downtown with independent restaurants, coffee shops, and small businesses that cater primarily to residents rather than tourists. The Pacific coast is accessible on foot or by bike, and the city's compact grid layout makes it easy to navigate.
Before You Go
Visas
Entry requirements depend on your nationality and travel history. For guidance, visit TravelerPulse's Visas section and consult the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection website (cbp.gov) or your nearest U.S. embassy or consulate well before travel.
Climate
El Segundo has a Mediterranean coastal climate. Summers (June–September) are warm and dry, typically reaching the mid-20s°C (mid-70s°F), moderated by sea breezes. The "June Gloom" phenomenon — persistent morning marine layer — is common from late May through early July. Winters are mild with occasional rain; temperatures rarely drop below 10°C (50°F). Layering is advisable year-round given the coastal temperature swings.
Practical prep
- El Segundo is not a major tourist destination; advance hotel booking is advisable, especially during events at nearby SoFi Stadium or the Kia Forum.
- Driving or rideshare are the primary ways to reach and move around the city.
- LAX is immediately adjacent, making El Segundo a convenient layover base, though aircraft noise is a real factor depending on active runways.
Getting There
By Air
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) borders El Segundo directly to the north and is one of the busiest airports in the world. Walking from certain terminals to the city's northern edge is technically possible but not practical due to airport road infrastructure; rideshare, taxi, or the LAX FlyAway bus are the recommended connections.
By Car
El Segundo sits just off the I-405 (San Diego Freeway) via the El Segundo Boulevard exit. From downtown Los Angeles, the drive is typically 20–35 minutes outside peak hours; traffic on the 405 corridor can extend that significantly during rush hours. Sepulveda Boulevard also runs directly through the city.
By Public Transit
The Big Blue Bus (Santa Monica's transit agency) and Los Angeles Metro bus lines serve El Segundo. The nearest Metro Rail station is the C Line (Green Line) at El Segundo Station on Nash Street, which connects to Redondo Beach and Norwalk. Verify current schedules and fares at metro.net before travel.
Getting Around
El Segundo's downtown core is compact and walkable; Main Street and Grand Avenue form the heart of activity and are easily navigated on foot. Cycling is a reasonable option along the flat coastal streets, and the Marvin Braude Bike Trail (the "Strand") passes through or very near the city's coastal edge, connecting the South Bay beach communities.
For travel beyond downtown — including to the beach access points, Chevron-area corridors, or neighboring Manhattan Beach and Hawthorne — a car or rideshare (Uber and Lyft operate reliably here given LAX proximity) is the most practical choice. Street parking downtown is generally available and metered; verify current parking rules on posted signage.
Things to See & Do
Beach Access
El Segundo Beach lies at the western end of El Segundo Boulevard, offering a relatively uncrowded stretch of Pacific coastline compared to neighboring Manhattan Beach. It is a good spot for walking, watching planes on approach to LAX (a unique experience), and casual recreation. Lifeguard coverage availability should be verified locally.
Main Street Downtown
Main Street between Mariposa and El Segundo Boulevard is the city's social hub. It features a mix of locally owned restaurants, breweries, a historic theater, and small shops. The area has a genuine neighborhood character worth exploring on foot.
Wiseburn Skate Park
A well-regarded community skate facility located in Wiseburn Park, popular with local youth and visiting skaters.
Aerospace History
While there is no major public aerospace museum in El Segundo itself, the city's industrial landscape and proximity to the Air Force Research Laboratory and defense campuses gives it a distinctive character. The Western Museum of Flight in Torrance (a short drive south) provides more in-depth aerospace history for interested visitors.
Nearby Sports and Entertainment
SoFi Stadium (home of the Rams and Chargers), the Kia Forum, and Intuit Dome are all within a few miles in Inglewood. Check schedules for concerts, NFL games, and NBA games when planning a visit.
Food & Drink
El Segundo has a food scene that serves its local population well, with a particular concentration of options on and around Main Street. Independent spots tend to outnumber chains here relative to many LA suburbs.
What to Expect
- Casual dining and quick service: Sandwiches, tacos, pizza, and burgers are well represented. The aerospace workforce drives a strong lunch trade on weekdays.
- Craft beer: El Segundo Brewing Company is a locally established craft brewery with a taproom in the city, known for hop-forward IPAs and seasonal releases. Verify current taproom hours before visiting.
- Coffee: Independent coffee shops are present alongside familiar chain options.
- Seafood: Given the coastal location, some restaurants offer fresh seafood, though the area is not primarily known as a seafood destination.
For a wider range of dining — including upscale options — neighboring Manhattan Beach and the broader South Bay area expand choices significantly. Most El Segundo restaurants are unpretentious and geared toward regulars; reservations are rarely required but may be advisable on weekend evenings.
Practical Information
Emergency Services
For all emergencies in the United States, dial 911. The El Segundo Police Department is the local law enforcement authority; for non-emergency inquiries, contact them through the city's official site (elsegundo.org) or verify the non-emergency number locally.
Medical
Urgent care clinics operate in and around El Segundo. The nearest full-service hospitals are in surrounding communities (Torrance, Hawthorne, and the broader Los Angeles area). Travelers should carry adequate travel health insurance and verify in-network providers before travel.
Money
ATMs are available at banks and some retailers along the main corridors. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Cash is useful for smaller vendors and parking meters.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi is available at most cafes and restaurants. Cellular coverage (all major U.S. carriers) is reliable throughout the city. International visitors should verify their roaming plans or consider a U.S. SIM card.
Tipping
Standard U.S. tipping norms apply: 18–20% at sit-down restaurants is customary; tip jars are common at counter-service coffee shops and casual spots.
Safety
El Segundo is generally considered a safe, low-crime community. Its small, tight-knit population and active community organizations contribute to a relatively quiet atmosphere compared to many other parts of the greater Los Angeles area.
Standard urban precautions apply: secure valuables in your vehicle (car break-ins occur across the South Bay area), be aware of your surroundings at night, and avoid leaving luggage unattended. The area around LAX's outer roads can be congested and confusing; follow posted signage carefully and be alert to unfamiliar traffic patterns if driving near the airport perimeter.
