Overview
Hacienda Heights is an unincorporated community in the Puente Hills area of Los Angeles County, sitting roughly 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. Home to around 54,000 residents, it occupies a series of rolling hills and flat valley land that transitions between suburban neighborhoods and preserved open space. The community is administratively governed by Los Angeles County rather than operating as an independent city.
The area is best known nationally for housing Hsi Lai Temple, one of the largest Buddhist temples in the Western Hemisphere, which draws visitors from across the United States and internationally. Beyond that landmark, Hacienda Heights serves primarily as a residential community with a strong multicultural character — particularly a large Chinese-American and Latino population — reflected in its restaurants, shops, and community institutions.
Travelers passing through the San Gabriel Valley or exploring the eastern Los Angeles suburbs will find Hacienda Heights a low-key, affordable alternative to staying in more tourist-heavy urban centers, with easy freeway access to Whittier, Industry, Rowland Heights, and Los Angeles proper.
Before You Go
Hacienda Heights is part of the United States. For visa and entry information, visit TravelerPulse's Visas section and consult the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's official immigration resources.
The climate is a classic Southern California inland type — warm and dry summers that can push into the 90s°F (32°C+), mild winters with occasional rain, and generally comfortable shoulder seasons. Wildfire smoke can affect air quality in late summer and fall; check AQR readings if you have respiratory sensitivities.
- Driving is essentially required. Public transit connections exist but are limited; a rental car or rideshare is strongly recommended.
- Dress casually but carry a layer in winter evenings, which can dip into the 40s°F (4–9°C).
- If you plan to visit Hsi Lai Temple, modest dress is respectful — covered shoulders and knees are appreciated.
Getting There
By Air
The most practical air gateway is Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), approximately 30–35 miles west depending on routing. Ontario International Airport (ONT) is roughly 20 miles east and typically less congested. Long Beach Airport (LGB) is another reasonable option to the south.
By Car
Hacienda Heights is well-served by Southern California freeways. The 60 Freeway (Pomona Freeway) runs directly through the community. The 605 Freeway provides a north-south connector to the west, and the 57 Freeway is accessible nearby. Drive times from downtown Los Angeles vary widely with traffic — plan for 30–60 minutes during peak hours.
By Transit
LA Metro bus routes serve portions of Hacienda Heights. The nearest Metro Rail stations are in adjacent communities; verify current routes and schedules at metro.net before traveling, as service patterns can change.
Getting Around
A personal vehicle or rideshare app (Uber, Lyft) is the most practical way to get around Hacienda Heights and reach nearby attractions. The community is laid out across hills and spread-out commercial strips that are not particularly walkable beyond specific blocks.
The 60 Freeway is the main artery for east-west travel, connecting you quickly to Whittier (west), Rowland Heights, and Diamond Bar (east). Hacienda Boulevard and Colima Road are key surface streets running through the commercial core.
Bicycling is possible on flatter streets and along certain paths in the Puente Hills, but the hilly terrain and lack of dedicated infrastructure across much of the area makes it challenging as a primary transport mode.
Things to See & Do
Hsi Lai Temple
The undisputed highlight of Hacienda Heights, Hsi Lai Temple (西來寺) is a large Taiwanese Buddhist monastery and temple complex operated by Fo Guang Shan. Opened in 1988, its architecture replicates traditional Chinese temple design at a substantial scale, including multiple halls, gardens, a museum, and a vegetarian restaurant. The temple welcomes visitors of all backgrounds; verify current visiting hours and any seasonal event schedules directly with the temple at hsilai.org.
Puente Hills Preserve
The Puente Hills Landfill Native Habitat Preservation Authority manages open space in the hills surrounding the community. Hiking trails wind through coastal sage scrub and chaparral with views over the San Gabriel Valley. Trail access points and conditions vary; check with the Puente Hills Habitat Authority for current information.
Hacienda Heights Community Center
A local hub for recreational programs, classes, and community events run by LA County Parks. Check the LA County Parks website for current programming.
- Explore the commercial strip along Colima Road for a slice of authentic San Gabriel Valley multicultural suburban life — supermarkets, dim sum spots, and specialty shops.
- The nearby Rowland Heights area (directly adjacent) expands shopping and dining options significantly.
Food & Drink
Hacienda Heights and its immediate surroundings offer genuinely good dining reflecting the area's Chinese-American and Latino communities, without the markups of tourist-oriented neighborhoods.
What to Look For
- Chinese and Taiwanese cuisine: Dim sum, hand-pulled noodles, hot pot, and boba tea shops are abundant along Colima Road and in adjacent Rowland Heights. Quality is generally high and prices are reasonable.
- Mexican food: Taquerias and family-run Mexican restaurants are scattered throughout the area, many serving regional Mexican cuisines.
- Asian grocery and bakeries: Large Asian supermarkets in the area stock ingredients and prepared foods that are worth exploring on their own.
Note that Hsi Lai Temple operates a vegetarian restaurant (Fo Guang Shan Cafe) on its grounds — a worthwhile stop for visitors touring the temple. Verify hours locally before visiting.
Alcohol is sold at licensed restaurants and stores; the community is not known for a bar or nightlife scene.
Practical Information
- Emergency services: Dial 911 for police, fire, or medical emergencies in the United States.
- Non-emergency county services: LA County Sheriff's Department serves the area; look up the Hacienda Hills station contact via the LA County Sheriff's official website.
- Hospitals: Several hospitals operate in nearby Whittier and the broader San Gabriel Valley area; verify the nearest emergency facility on arrival.
- Internet and mobile: Standard US carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) provide good coverage. Wi-Fi is available at most hotels and many restaurants.
- Tipping: Standard US tipping customs apply — roughly 18–20% at sit-down restaurants, optional at counter-service spots.
- Sales tax: Los Angeles County sales tax applies to purchases; verify the current rate locally as rates can change.
Safety
Hacienda Heights is a generally quiet residential community with a low-key atmosphere. Standard urban travel precautions apply: lock vehicles, don't leave valuables visible in cars, and be aware of your surroundings at night in less-trafficked areas.
Wildfire risk is a real seasonal consideration given the adjacent Puente Hills terrain. In late summer and fall, monitor local alerts through lacounty.gov and the LA County Fire Department's official channels if you are hiking or staying in hillside areas. Air quality can degrade quickly during fire events; check AirNow.gov for real-time readings.
