Overview
SoMa — South of Market is a dense, eclectic district in San Francisco occupying the blocks south of Market Street, roughly bounded by the Embarcadero, the Caltrain station at 4th and King, and the Mission District. It is not a separate city but one of San Francisco's most visited and rapidly changed urban neighborhoods.
Historically a working-class and light-industrial area, SoMa transformed significantly during the dot-com boom of the 1990s and again during the tech resurgence of the 2010s. Warehouses became offices, galleries, and event spaces. Today the neighborhood hosts some of San Francisco's most prominent cultural institutions alongside craft breweries, nightclubs, co-working spaces, and restaurants.
The neighborhood has a genuinely mixed character: glassy corporate campuses sit a short walk from community arts spaces and long-established LGBTQ+ venues. Visitors who engage with the full texture of SoMa get a more honest picture of contemporary San Francisco than many tourist-facing districts provide.

Getting There
By Air
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the primary gateway, located roughly 14 miles south of SoMa. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) connects SFO directly to downtown San Francisco with a stop at Powell Street, a short walk or ride from most of SoMa. By Train
Caltrain's San Francisco terminal is at 4th and King Streets, which sits on SoMa's southern edge — a convenient arrival point if traveling from the Peninsula or South Bay. By Car
Driving into SoMa is possible via I-80 and US-101, but parking is expensive and limited. Arriving without a car is strongly recommended for most visitors.
Getting Around
SoMa is walkable for trips within the neighborhood, though some blocks between major attractions are longer than they appear on a map. The district is well-served by San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) bus and light-rail lines; BART also passes through with stops at Powell Street and Montgomery Street on its northern edge.

- Brunch and coffee: The weekend brunch culture is active; independent cafes are numerous, though competition from large chains is also present.
Because restaurant turnover in SoMa is high, specific recommendations age quickly. Use current platforms such as Yelp or Google Maps for up-to-date options and hours. The Yelp company itself is headquartered in SoMa — a fitting if ironic local fact.
Note that dining near major venues (Oracle Park, Chase Center) on event days can mean longer waits and higher demand; plan accordingly.

Money
ATMs are widely available. Most businesses accept major credit and debit cards; contactless payment is common. San Francisco has no practical need for large amounts of cash for most travelers.
Tipping

Safety
SoMa, like much of central San Francisco, has visible homelessness and open drug use in certain blocks, particularly in the Tenderloin-adjacent areas to the north and west, and around some transit hubs. This is a real civic issue in the city and visitors should be informed rather than alarmed.

The neighborhood around Yerba Buena Gardens, SFMOMA, and the main museum corridor is well-trafficked and generally active during daytime hours. The 11th Street corridor is busiest and most active (and loudest) on weekend nights.
