Overview
Warrensburg is a small city of roughly 20,000 people in Johnson County, west-central Missouri, about 50 miles southeast of Kansas City along US-50. It is the county seat and the home of the University of Central Missouri (UCM), which lends the city a modest college-town energy without overwhelming its quiet, small-town character.
The city is perhaps best known nationally for the Old Drum court case of 1870, in which Senator George Graham Vest delivered his famous "Eulogy of the Dog" speech defending a farmer's right to shoot a dog that killed his neighbor's hound. A bronze statue of Old Drum stands on the Johnson County Courthouse lawn and has become something of a local landmark.
Warrensburg sits near Whiteman Air Force Base, which is home to the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber wing and contributes significantly to the local economy and identity. The surrounding countryside is gently rolling farmland, and the region offers easy access to Pertle Springs park and the Katy Trail corridor.
Before You Go
Warrensburg is a domestic US destination, so no passport or visa is required for US citizens. International visitors should check TravelerPulse's Visas section and consult the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website for current entry requirements before traveling.
The city has limited large-scale accommodations and dining variety compared to a metropolitan area, so booking lodging in advance is advisable during UCM graduation weekends, home football games, and the Johnson County Fair. Check the UCM academic calendar before planning your visit if you want to avoid higher demand periods.
Missouri's climate in this region features hot, humid summers and cold winters with occasional ice storms. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable weather. Pack layers if visiting March–April or October–November, as temperatures can swing considerably.
Getting There
By Air
The nearest major airport is Kansas City International Airport (MCI), approximately 65 miles northwest of Warrensburg. A rental car is the most practical way to continue the journey from MCI. Columbia Regional Airport (COU), roughly 65 miles to the east, is a smaller option with limited national service.
By Car
US Highway 50 runs directly through Warrensburg, making it straightforward to reach from Kansas City to the west or Jefferson City and Columbia to the east. From Kansas City, the drive is roughly 50–60 miles and takes under an hour under normal conditions.
By Train
Amtrak's Missouri River Runner service between Kansas City and St. Louis stops in Warrensburg at the historic depot on North Holden Street. Verify current schedules and fares directly with Amtrak (amtrak.com), as service frequency can change.
Getting Around
Warrensburg is a small, walkable city in its core downtown and UCM campus areas. Many attractions, restaurants, and shops on North Holden Street are within easy walking distance of each other.
A personal vehicle or rental car is the most practical option for reaching Whiteman AFB events (when open to the public), Pertle Springs, or destinations outside downtown. Rideshare availability (Uber, Lyft) exists but may be limited compared to larger cities — verify availability before relying on it exclusively.
The UCM campus operates its own shuttle system for students, but general public schedules and routes should be confirmed directly with the university.
Where to Stay
Warrensburg has a limited but functional range of lodging, including several national chain properties along the US-50 corridor. These are the most reliable options in terms of consistent availability and amenities. A small number of bed-and-breakfast and independent lodging options may also be available — search current booking platforms to see what is operating at the time of your visit.
Demand spikes around UCM graduation (typically May), home Mule football weekends in the fall, and the Johnson County Fair. Book well ahead for those periods. Visitors who want more hotel variety can base themselves in the Kansas City metro and make a day trip, given the roughly one-hour drive.
Things to See & Do
Old Drum Statue & Johnson County Courthouse
The bronze statue of Old Drum on the courthouse lawn at Pine and Holden Streets is the city's most iconic landmark. The surrounding courthouse square is a pleasant spot to walk and take in the historic architecture.
University of Central Missouri Campus
UCM's campus is open to visitors and features the James C. Kirkpatrick Library, several public art installations, and the Yeater Theatre for performing arts. Check the university's events calendar for public lectures, concerts, and athletic events.
Pertle Springs
This city-managed recreational area a short drive from downtown includes a lake, walking trails, picnic facilities, and a disc golf course. It is a popular spot for local families and UCM students. Hours and seasonal amenities should be confirmed with Warrensburg Parks & Recreation.
Whiteman Air Force Base Air Shows
When Whiteman AFB hosts public air shows — most notably featuring the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber — they draw visitors from across the region. These events are not annual and require advance planning; check official USAF and base public affairs channels for schedules.
Historic Downtown
North Holden Street and the surrounding blocks contain locally owned shops, restaurants, and historic storefronts. A self-guided walk through downtown gives a good sense of the city's 19th-century built heritage.
Food & Drink
Warrensburg's dining scene reflects its size — a modest but functional range of locally owned restaurants, casual American fare, and a handful of options catering to the UCM student population. Expect diners, pizza places, Mexican restaurants, and a few bar-and-grill establishments rather than fine dining.
Several locally owned restaurants are clustered in and around the downtown corridor on North Holden Street. It is worth walking the street on arrival to see what is currently open, as small-town restaurant turnover can be higher than in larger cities.
Alcohol is available at licensed establishments; Missouri has no unusual restrictions that would surprise a typical American traveler. The legal drinking age is 21. Verify locally for any bar or brewery that may have opened or closed recently.
Practical Information
Emergency Services
For all emergencies in the US, dial 911. The Warrensburg Police Department and Johnson County Sheriff's Office serve the area. Western Missouri Medical Center is the local hospital — verify its address and current services on its official website before travel.
Connectivity
Major US carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) provide coverage in Warrensburg. Free Wi-Fi is available in many downtown establishments and on the UCM campus.
Tipping
Standard US tipping conventions apply: 15–20% at sit-down restaurants, $1–2 per drink at bars, and a few dollars per night for hotel housekeeping is appreciated.
Shopping Hours
Most local businesses follow conventional US retail hours, generally Monday–Saturday with reduced or no Sunday hours. Verify locally, as small businesses may keep irregular schedules.
Safety
Warrensburg is generally considered a safe, low-crime small city by US standards. Normal urban precautions apply — be aware of your surroundings after dark, secure valuables in your vehicle, and do not leave bags unattended.
Severe weather is a real seasonal concern in Missouri. Tornado season peaks in spring and again in early fall. Familiarize yourself with your lodging's severe weather procedures and pay attention to local emergency alerts (the Wireless Emergency Alert system on US mobile phones will notify you automatically).
Ice storms in winter can make roads hazardous. If driving in December–February, monitor forecasts and be prepared to delay travel if a winter storm is forecast.
