Overview
South Lake Union (SLU) is a dense, walkable neighborhood sitting between downtown Seattle and the southern shore of Lake Union. Once a light-industrial district of warehouses and shipyards, it was substantially redeveloped through the 2000s and 2010s into one of the city's primary technology and biomedical corridors. Amazon's main campus anchors the southern portion of the neighborhood and has brought with it a dense concentration of cafés, restaurants, apartment towers, and supporting retail.
Despite the corporate polish, SLU retains genuine waterfront character. The Lake Union shoreline is active with kayakers, paddleboarders, houseboats, historic wooden boats, and the regular sight and sound of seaplanes banking over the water. The Seattle Center of Seaplane Operations has operated here for decades, offering a distinct urban-aviation atmosphere found in few other American neighborhoods.
The neighborhood is compact enough to explore largely on foot. Its grid of streets connects quickly to Capitol Hill to the east, Westlake and Belltown to the south, and Eastlake along the lake's eastern edge. Visitors who are primarily interested in Pike Place Market or the Space Needle will find SLU a short ride away, making it a practical and increasingly popular base.

Getting There
By Air

Getting Around
