Founded in 2001 as a joint venture between the Government of Kazakhstan's sovereign wealth fund Samruk-Kazyna (51%) and BAE Systems (49%), the airline commenced operations in May 2002, launching its first regular scheduled domestic flight between Almaty and Astana.
