Virgin America

Virgin America was a low-cost carrier headquartered in Burlingame, California, that operated from 2007 until 2018. Founded under the Virgin brand by Sir Richard Branson, it quickly became known for its distinctive cabin design, mood lighting, and in-flight entertainment systems that set it apart from legacy US carriers. The airline focused primarily on transcontinental routes and major US markets, building a loyal following among frequent travelers who appreciated its premium economy-style service at competitive prices. It was acquired by Alaska Airlines in 2016 for approximately $2.6 billion. Following the acquisition, Alaska Airlines gradually integrated Virgin America's routes and aircraft into its own network, officially retiring the Virgin America brand on April 25, 2018. The merger significantly expanded Alaska Airlines' presence on the US West Coast and transcontinental markets.
