Banda Aceh's Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport may be compact, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to local flavor. The main terminal's modest food court sits airside past security and offers a handful of stalls serving Acehnese staples throughout the day. Don't expect a sprawling dining hall — this is an intimate, honest snapshot of what locals actually eat, and that's precisely the charm.
The standout dish to seek out before your flight is mie Aceh, the region's fiery signature noodle dish cooked with thick yellow noodles, fragrant spices, and your choice of seafood or beef. A few stalls also serve nasi gurih, Aceh's aromatic coconut rice often paired with fried anchovies and sambal, making for a deeply satisfying pre-departure meal. Wash it all down with a glass of kopi Aceh — the strong, sweet local coffee that's become something of a cultural institution across Sumatra.
Beyond the noodles and rice, keep an eye out for martabak Aceh, the stuffed savory pancake that locals grab as a quick snack between connections. The food options are priced fairly and portions are generous, so there's little reason to arrive at the gate hungry. If you have time before heading through security, the small cafés near the departure hall entrance serve fresh juice and light bites in a more relaxed setting — worth factoring into your schedule if you've arrived early.

Sultan Iskandar Muda International Airport, formerly known as Blangbintang Airport, is an international airport serving Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh Province in Indonesia. While it primarily serves Banda Aceh, the airport is not located within the city itself; it lies in Aceh Besar Regency, approximately 13.5 km southeast of the city center. The airport is named in honor of Sultan Iskandar Muda (1583-1636), the twelfth ruler of the Aceh Sultanate, who reigned from 1607 to 1636 and is recognized as a national hero of Indonesia. As the main air gateway to Banda Aceh and the wider Aceh region, the airport plays a vital role in regional connectivity. It operates regular domestic services to major Indonesian cities such as Jakarta and Medan, as well as international services to Kuala Lumpur and Penang in Malaysia. It also handles seasonal flights to Jeddah and Medina in Saudi Arabia to accommodate Hajj and Umrah pilgrims.
