The Boeing 737-900 is the largest variant of the Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG) family, stretching the fuselage to accommodate more passengers than any previous 737 model. It was developed to meet airline demand for higher-capacity single-aisle aircraft on medium-haul routes, competing directly with the Airbus A321. The 737-900 entered service in 2001 with launch customer Alaska Airlines. It retains the same basic fuselage cross-section and systems as other 737NG variants but features a lengthened fuselage, additional exit doors, and reinforced structure. The aircraft is powered by CFM56-7B engines, consistent with the rest of the NG family. A subsequent improved version, the 737-900ER (Extended Range), was introduced in 2007 with additional fuel tanks, full passenger exits, and a higher maximum takeoff weight, offering greater range and flexibility. The 737-900ER became significantly more popular commercially than the baseline -900.
