It serves as the primary air hub for Quanzhou, one of China's most economically active cities and a historic maritime Silk Road port. The airport handles a mix of domestic routes connecting Quanzhou to major Chinese cities, as well as select international and regional services to destinations in Southeast Asia and other parts of Asia. It supports the travel demands of Quanzhou's large manufacturing and business community, particularly in the footwear and textile industries. Due to its proximity to Xiamen, another major Fujian airport, Jinjiang International competes regionally but has grown steadily alongside Quanzhou's economic expansion. Capacity upgrades and terminal improvements have been pursued to accommodate rising passenger volumes.

It is located 12 km (7.5 mi) south of the city center, in the county-level city of Jinjiang, which is under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Quanzhou.
