Overview
Nellis Air Force Base is an active United States Air Force installation located in Clark County, Nevada, roughly 8 miles northeast of downtown Las Vegas. With a residential population of around 3,000, it functions as a self-contained military community rather than a conventional city open to general tourism.
The base is home to the United States Air Force Warfare Center, the 99th Air Base Wing, and the famous Thunderbirds aerial demonstration squadron. It is widely regarded as one of the premier tactical fighter training installations in the world, hosting the large-scale Red Flag exercises that bring together air forces from allied nations.
For civilians, Nellis is notable primarily through its public-facing asset: the Nellis Air Force Base Air Show, held periodically, which grants the general public a rare opportunity to experience the base, view military aircraft up close, and watch the Thunderbirds perform. Outside of authorized events or official business, the base is not accessible to the general public.
Before You Go
Access and Authorization
Nellis AFB is an active military installation. Entry for civilians requires either a valid Department of Defense ID, a visitor pass sponsored by an authorized base resident or official, or attendance at a publicly announced event such as an air show. Do not attempt to enter without proper credentials — security is strict and enforced at all gates.
Visas
For general U.S. entry visa guidance, check TravelerPulse's Visas section and consult the official U.S. Customs and Border Protection website. Foreign nationals attending official military events or exchanges face additional vetting; coordinate through the sponsoring organization well in advance.
What to Bring
- Government-issued photo ID is required at entry gates at all times.
- During air shows or public events, bag restrictions and prohibited items lists are published in advance — verify these on the official Nellis AFB public affairs channels before attending.
- The Mojave Desert climate means sun protection, water, and layered clothing are advisable for outdoor events.
Getting There
From Las Vegas
Nellis AFB sits approximately 8 miles northeast of the Las Vegas Strip, making it an easy drive via Interstate 15 North to Las Vegas Boulevard North, or via Nellis Boulevard. Travel time from the Strip is typically 15–25 minutes depending on traffic.
By Air
Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) is the nearest commercial airport, located southwest of the base. Car rental, ride-share services, and taxis are widely available at the airport.
Public Transit
Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Southern Nevada bus routes serve the North Las Vegas and Nellis Boulevard corridor. Verify current route information and stops on the RTC website before travel, as schedules change. During major public events, temporary shuttle services from off-base parking areas are sometimes arranged — check official event communications.
Things to See & Do
Nellis AFB Air Show
The base periodically hosts a public air show, one of the largest military aviation events in the western United States. It typically features performances by the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, static displays of military and vintage aircraft, and demonstrations of modern aerial capabilities. Dates are not fixed annually; check the official Nellis AFB public affairs pages or the Air Force's event listings for announced dates.
The Thunderbirds
The U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, the Thunderbirds, is based at Nellis. While their home performances occur during the base air show, they tour extensively and perform at venues across the country. Their schedule is published on the official Air Force website.
For Authorized Visitors
Those with base access can make use of on-base recreational facilities, the golf course, fitness centers, and the commissary and exchange retail stores, subject to eligibility rules. These facilities are not open to the general public.
Practical Information
Emergency Services
For emergencies on base, military security forces are the first point of contact. Off-base emergencies: dial 911.
Communication
Standard U.S. mobile networks (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) provide coverage in the area. Photography on base is subject to restrictions — follow posted signage and instructions from security personnel, even during public events.
On-Base Amenities
The base has its own medical clinic, dining facilities, and retail exchange stores, available to eligible personnel and their dependents. Civilians attending public events should expect temporary food vendors and portable facilities set up for the occasion rather than permanent base amenities.
Nearby Services
North Las Vegas, which borders the base, offers the full range of civilian hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and retail stores. Las Vegas itself provides every major amenity within a short drive.
Safety
Nellis AFB maintains a strong security posture as an active military installation. All visitors must comply with instructions from Security Forces personnel and follow posted rules at all times. Unauthorized entry attempts are treated seriously and can result in detention.
During public events, expect vehicle inspections, bag checks, and crowd management measures. Arrive early and follow published guidelines to avoid delays at entry gates.
The surrounding North Las Vegas area is a typical urban Nevada community. Exercise standard urban awareness — secure valuables, be mindful of your surroundings in parking areas, and use well-lit routes if moving around after dark.
