Cubana de Aviación is the national airline of Cuba and one of the oldest airlines in the Western Hemisphere, having been founded in 1929. It operates international routes connecting Havana to destinations across Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and beyond, serving as the primary flag carrier of the Cuban state. The airline has faced significant operational challenges over the decades, including the U.S. trade embargo, which has severely restricted its access to modern Western aircraft and spare parts. As a result, Cubana has historically relied on Soviet and Russian-built aircraft alongside older Western models obtained through third-party arrangements. In recent years, Cubana has dramatically reduced its operations due to fuel shortages, financial difficulties, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline suspended most of its scheduled international flights for extended periods and has struggled to maintain a reliable schedule, raising uncertainty about its long-term viability.
