Imam Khomeini International Airport isn't exactly a culinary destination, but it offers more than you might expect once you clear security. The main terminal's airside food court hosts a handful of sit-down spots and fast-casual counters where you can grab a proper Iranian meal before a long flight. Look for stalls serving ghormeh sabzi and chelow kebab — fragrant, saffron-laced rice dishes that are deeply comforting if you're about to spend hours in the air.
For something lighter, the bakery counters near the departure gates stock freshly baked sangak and barbari flatbreads, best enjoyed warm with a smear of local butter and a cup of strong Persian tea. These breads are a staple of Iranian breakfast culture, and finding them airside feels like a small gift from the city you're leaving behind. A handful of international fast-food chains are also scattered throughout, offering familiar fallbacks if you're traveling with picky eaters or simply need something quick.
One underrated tip: the airport's traditional tea houses — essentially small counters with stools — serve chai in those classic tulip-shaped glasses alongside dates and rock sugar, which is exactly how Iranians have been drinking tea for centuries. It's worth arriving early enough to sit, sip slowly, and take in the particular energy of the terminal. The food here won't make your top-ten list, but it'll send you off with an authentic taste of Iran lingering on your palate.
