Aeroflot Russian Airlines is the national carrier of Russia and one of the oldest airlines in the world, tracing its origins to 1923. Headquartered in Moscow, it operates an extensive network of domestic and international routes, serving destinations across Europe, Asia, the Americas, and beyond. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Aeroflot was restructured as a joint-stock company and gradually modernized its fleet and service standards. It became a member of the SkyTeam alliance in 2006, aligning itself with major global carriers. The airline is majority state-owned, with the Russian government holding a controlling stake. Aeroflot has faced significant operational challenges since 2022 due to international sanctions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, resulting in restricted access to Western aircraft, parts, and airspace. Despite these challenges, it continues to operate as Russia's dominant carrier.
