Overview
West Cambie is a predominantly residential neighbourhood located in the City of Richmond, British Columbia, sitting in the southwestern corner of Metro Vancouver. With a population of roughly 12,000, it is one of Richmond's newer planned communities, developed substantially from the mid-2000s onward as transit-oriented housing expanded along the Canada Line corridor.
The neighbourhood is characterised by a mix of mid-rise condominiums, townhouses, and low-rise apartment buildings, many of which were built with walkability in mind. Its streets are orderly and relatively quiet compared to older, denser parts of Richmond, and the area attracts a diverse, largely young professional and family demographic.
For visitors, West Cambie functions primarily as a convenient and affordable base for exploring greater Richmond and Vancouver rather than as a destination in its own right. That said, the neighbourhood does offer good transit connections, solid everyday dining options, and easy access to Richmond's celebrated food scene.

Winters are mild but wet and overcast, with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing. Rain is common from October through April. Pack a waterproof jacket regardless of the season.
Practical Expectations
- West Cambie is a quiet neighbourhood; expect a calm, suburban atmosphere rather than a tourist hub.

- English is the working language, but Mandarin and Cantonese are widely understood in many local businesses.
Getting There
By Air
Vancouver International Airport (YVR) is the closest major airport, located just a few kilometres west of West Cambie in the municipality of Richmond. The Canada Line SkyTrain connects YVR directly to stations serving the Richmond area, making it one of the most airport-convenient neighbourhoods in the region. Travel time from the airport by SkyTrain is short — verify current schedules and journey times on the TransLink website.
By SkyTrain
The Canada Line is the primary transit spine for this area. The Aberdeen and Lansdowne SkyTrain stations are the closest stops to West Cambie, both within walking distance or a short bus ride of most of the neighbourhood. From downtown Vancouver, the Canada Line journey takes roughly 20–30 minutes.
By Road
West Cambie is accessible via the No. 3 Road corridor in Richmond and is reasonably well connected to the broader Metro Vancouver road network. Visitors arriving by car from Vancouver typically use the Arthur Laing Bridge or the Oak Street Bridge. Street parking and underground parking are available throughout the neighbourhood; verify local signage for regulations.
Getting Around
West Cambie is a walkable neighbourhood for day-to-day errands, and most residents and visitors get around by a combination of foot, bicycle, and public transit.
Transit
TransLink operates bus routes through and around West Cambie in addition to the Canada Line SkyTrain. A reloadable Compass Card is the most convenient way to pay for transit and works across SkyTrain, bus, and SeaBus services in Metro Vancouver. Verify current fares and routes at the TransLink website.
Cycling
Richmond has an extensive network of flat cycling paths and bike lanes, making West Cambie very cycle-friendly. Bike-share options may be available; verify locally for current operators and coverage areas.
Rideshare and Taxis
Rideshare apps (including Uber and Lyft) operate in Metro Vancouver. Taxis are also available; confirm rates with the driver before departure.
Things to See & Do
West Cambie itself is primarily residential, so most points of interest are either within the neighbourhood's everyday fabric or a short trip away.
Parks and Green Space
Small neighbourhood parks are dotted throughout West Cambie and provide pleasant spots for walking or relaxing. For larger green space, Garry Point Park and Steveston Village are a short drive or bus ride to the south, offering waterfront paths, historical sites, and views of the Fraser River mouth.
Richmond Centre
The Richmond Centre shopping mall, anchored near the Lansdowne SkyTrain station, is within easy reach and serves as a practical hub for retail, food court dining, and services.
Exploring Richmond
West Cambie's greatest asset is its position as a launchpad for Richmond's broader attractions: the Aberdeen Centre and Parker Place malls (notable for East Asian retail and dining), the Richmond Olympic Oval (a legacy venue from the 2010 Winter Games), and the fishing village of Steveston. All are accessible by transit or a short drive.
Food & Drink
Richmond as a whole has an outstanding reputation for East Asian cuisine — widely considered among the best outside Asia — and West Cambie benefits from its proximity to this dining culture.
Local Options
The neighbourhood has a cluster of restaurants and cafés serving everyday meals, with a strong representation of Chinese, Taiwanese bubble tea shops, and pan-Asian eateries. Most are clustered along or near the main commercial corridors connecting to No. 3 Road.
Wider Richmond Dining
For a more comprehensive dining experience, the Aberdeen Centre area and Alexandra Road (sometimes called the "Golden Village" food corridor) are short transit rides away. These areas concentrate some of Richmond's most celebrated dim sum houses, hot pot restaurants, seafood specialists, and dessert cafés. Given the density and variety, it is worth researching specific restaurants in advance through current review platforms, as businesses and hours change regularly.
Grocery and Markets
Several Asian supermarkets operate in the Richmond area and carry an exceptional range of fresh produce, seafood, and specialty ingredients. Verify locations and hours locally.

Safety
West Cambie is a quiet, planned residential neighbourhood and is generally considered safe for visitors. Standard urban precautions apply: be aware of your surroundings, keep valuables out of sight in parked vehicles, and secure accommodation and travel documents carefully.
Richmond and Metro Vancouver as a whole are relatively low-risk destinations for most travellers, though like any urban area they are not entirely free of petty theft. If you encounter any issue, contact local police through the non-emergency line (verify the current number for the Richmond RCMP detachment) or dial 911 in an emergency.
