The airline is a subsidiary of the SATA Group, the regional aviation holding company owned by the Regional Government of the Azores.
Founded in 1990, SATA International complements its sister carrier Azores Airlines brand, which it rebranded under in 2015, operating under the commercial identity Azores Airlines while retaining its legal name. The airline plays a vital role in connecting the geographically isolated Azores islands to mainland Portugal, continental Europe, and the Azorean diaspora communities in North America.
