Al Maktoum International Airport, also known as Dubai World Central (DWC), is located in Jebel Ali, approximately 37 kilometres southwest of central Dubai. It opened in 2010 as a cargo facility before welcoming its first commercial passenger flights in 2013. The airport is operated by Dubai Airports and is part of the larger Dubai South development zone. Designed with extraordinary ambition, Al Maktoum International is planned to eventually become the world's largest airport, with a projected ultimate capacity of up to 260 million passengers per year. Its development has proceeded in phases, with significant expansion plans announced by Dubai's government to accommodate the relocation of Emirates airline and other carriers from Dubai International Airport (DXB). As of recent years, the airport handles a mix of cargo operations and limited passenger services, with full-scale passenger operations subject to ongoing phased construction. It features two runways and substantial cargo infrastructure, positioning it as a key logistics hub in the region.
