Governador Aluízio Alves International Airport, coded NAT/SBSG, is the primary commercial airport serving Natal, the capital of Rio Grande do Norte state in northeastern Brazil. It replaced the older Augusto Severo Airport and was inaugurated in 2014, offering a modern facility designed to handle significantly higher passenger volumes. The airport is located in the municipality of São Gonçalo do Amarante, approximately 35 kilometers west of central Natal. Its strategic position on Brazil's northeastern tip makes it one of the closest Brazilian airports to Europe and Africa, historically making Natal a key transatlantic waypoint. The facility was developed with infrastructure to support international long-haul operations and serves as an important hub for domestic routes across Brazil, as well as charter and scheduled international flights, particularly to Portugal and other European destinations.
