The airport was operated by Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) for decades before being transferred to the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) in November 2016, making it locally controlled. Since that transition, ONT has focused aggressively on expanding airline service and passenger volumes. Ontario handles millions of passengers annually and serves as a less congested alternative to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). It offers both domestic and limited international service, with cargo operations also playing a significant role in the airport's activity.
