The Boeing 737-400 is a stretched variant of the 737 Classic family, developed as a higher-capacity complement to the 737-300. It entered service in 1988 and was designed to carry more passengers on short to medium-haul routes while retaining the same basic airframe and systems as its siblings. Powered by CFM International CFM56-3 turbofan engines, the -400 offered airlines improved fuel efficiency over older 737 variants and could seat up to around 188 passengers in a high-density single-class layout. Its stretched fuselage accommodated roughly 10 additional rows compared to the -300. Production of the 737-400 ended in 2000, with 486 aircraft delivered. Many remain in service today with charter carriers, low-cost airlines, and freight operators, though major legacy carriers have largely retired the type in favor of Next Generation 737s.

The Boeing 737 Classic is a series of narrow-body airliners produced by Boeing Commercial Airplanes, the second generation of the Boeing 737 series of aircraft. Development began in 1979 and the first variant, the 737-300, first flew in February 1984 and entered service that December. The stretched 737-400 first flew in February 1988 and entered service later that year. The shortest variant, the 737-500, first flew in June 1989 and entered service in 1990.
