It is one of the busiest airports in Europe, handling tens of millions of passengers each year, predominantly during the summer tourist season.
The airport is operated by Aena, Spain's national airport authority, and serves as a critical hub for leisure travel to the Mediterranean island. It handles a high volume of charter and low-cost carrier flights from across Europe, particularly from the United Kingdom, Germany, Scandinavia, and other northern European countries.
Despite its enormous passenger throughput in summer months, the airport experiences significant seasonal variation, with traffic dropping considerably in winter. Ongoing infrastructure investments by Aena have sought to improve capacity and passenger experience.
