Sacramento International Airport (SMF) is the primary commercial airport serving California's state capital and the greater Sacramento region. Located approximately 10 miles northwest of downtown Sacramento, it handles millions of passengers annually and connects the region to major domestic hubs and select international destinations. The airport underwent a major modernization effort with the opening of Terminal B in 2011, significantly expanding its capacity and amenities. It is operated by the County of Sacramento Department of Airports and serves as an important alternative to the congested Bay Area airports. SMF offers nonstop service to dozens of U.S. cities as well as some international routes, and is particularly popular with travelers from the Sacramento Valley, Sierra Nevada foothills, and parts of the Central Valley.
