Overview
Lochdale is a small residential community situated in the eastern part of Burnaby, British Columbia, with a population of roughly 8,500. It sits at the northeastern fringe of the City of Burnaby, bordered by North Road to the east (which marks the boundary with Coquitlam) and relatively close to Burnaby Lake Regional Park to the south.
The neighbourhood is primarily a quiet, family-oriented suburb rather than a destination in its own right. Most visitors come through Lochdale while exploring greater Burnaby or as a convenient, affordable base for day trips into Vancouver, Coquitlam, and the wider Metro Vancouver region.
Because Lochdale merges seamlessly into surrounding Burnaby, travellers should think of it as part of that broader context. Many of the region's most compelling attractions — Burnaby Lake, Simon Fraser University, and Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area — are within easy reach.

Getting There
By Air
The nearest major airport is Vancouver International Airport (YVR) in Richmond, approximately 30–40 minutes by car from Lochdale depending on traffic. From YVR, the Canada Line SkyTrain connects to downtown Vancouver, where you can transfer to other TransLink services reaching Burnaby.
By SkyTrain & Bus
TransLink's Millennium Line SkyTrain runs through Burnaby and is the most practical rapid-transit option for reaching the area. The Lougheed Town Centre station is among the closest SkyTrain stops. Bus routes operated by TransLink connect the surrounding streets; verify current route maps and schedules at translink.ca before travel.
By Car
Lochdale is accessible via the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1) and Highway 7. North Road (Highway 7A) forms its eastern boundary. Street parking in residential areas is generally available, but always check posted signs for restrictions.
Getting Around
Getting around Lochdale and its surroundings is easiest by car or by using TransLink's integrated bus and SkyTrain network. The Compass Card (a reloadable smart card) is the standard fare payment method across all TransLink modes — buses, SkyTrain, and SeaBus — and can be purchased at SkyTrain stations.
Cycling is feasible on quieter residential streets, and Burnaby has been gradually expanding its cycling infrastructure. Ride-hailing services (Uber, Lyft, and local operators) are available throughout Metro Vancouver. Verify current coverage and pricing within the apps before your trip.
Things to See & Do
Burnaby Lake Regional Park
Located just south of Lochdale, Burnaby Lake Regional Park is one of the largest urban parks in Metro Vancouver. It offers walking and cycling trails around the lake, wildlife viewing (great blue herons, waterfowl, and river otters are regularly spotted), and a rowing and canoeing venue. The park is free to enter; verify current trail conditions at metrovancouver.org.
Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area & SFU
A short drive or bus ride west leads to Burnaby Mountain, home to Simon Fraser University and the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area. Trails through second-growth forest offer panoramic views over Burrard Inlet, Indian Arm, and the North Shore mountains. The SFU campus itself features notable Brutalist architecture and public art.
Lougheed Town Centre
A few minutes from Lochdale, Lougheed Town Centre is a large regional shopping and services hub with a SkyTrain station, making it a useful logistical base for exploring the wider region.
Nearby Coquitlam
North Road places Lochdale within easy walking or cycling distance of Coquitlam, where additional parks, the Coquitlam River trail system, and amenities are accessible.
Food & Drink
Lochdale itself is a residential neighbourhood with limited dedicated dining options. However, the surrounding Burnaby area — particularly along North Road, Lougheed Highway, and around Lougheed Town Centre — offers a broad range of restaurants reflecting Metro Vancouver's multicultural population. Korean, Chinese, Japanese, South Asian, and Vietnamese restaurants are all well represented in the broader Burnaby–Coquitlam corridor.
For grocery shopping, several major supermarket chains and Asian grocery stores operate in the area. Verify opening hours locally, as these can vary. Visitors looking for specialty coffee shops or independent restaurants may find a wider selection by heading into central Burnaby or Vancouver.

Money
Most establishments accept major credit and debit cards. ATMs are available at Lougheed Town Centre and at banks along main commercial corridors. Tipping (typically 15–20%) is customary at sit-down restaurants and for personal services.
Safety
Lochdale is a generally safe residential neighbourhood with crime rates consistent with suburban Metro Vancouver norms. Standard urban precautions apply: be aware of your surroundings, secure valuables in your vehicle, and avoid leaving bags unattended.
The regional non-emergency police line for Burnaby is handled by the RCMP Burnaby detachment — verify the current non-emergency number on the RCMP's official website. For any emergency, call 911.
