Porto Alegre-Salgado Filho International Airport is the main airport serving Porto Alegre, the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. Named after Brazilian aviation pioneer Salgado Filho, it handles both domestic and international flights and is one of the busiest airports in the southern region of the country. The airport underwent significant expansion and modernization projects in preparation for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which included Porto Alegre as one of its host cities. It is operated under a concession by Fraport Brasil following the privatization of Brazilian airports. In May 2024, the airport suffered severe damage due to catastrophic flooding in Rio Grande do Sul, forcing an extended closure for repairs and significantly disrupting air travel in the region.
