Overview
Hastings-Sunrise is a residential neighbourhood in the northeastern part of Vancouver, British Columbia, occupying a stretch of land roughly between the Downtown Eastside to the west and Burnaby to the east. With a population of around 35,000, it sits within the City of Vancouver but functions with the quieter rhythms of a close-knit urban community rather than a tourist district.
The neighbourhood takes its name from the intersection of Hastings Street — one of Vancouver's major east–west arterials — and the Sunrise area to the east. The community has long been shaped by working-class roots and waves of immigration, giving it an authentic, lived-in character that contrasts with more curated parts of the city.
Hastings Park is the neighbourhood's centrepiece: a large urban park that includes the PNE (Pacific National Exhibition) fairgrounds, Playland amusement park, Sanctuary Garden, and the historic Hastings Racecourse site. Outside of the park, visitors will find independent cafés, local grocers, and a streetscape that reflects Vancouver's multicultural character without performing it for tourists.
Before You Go
Visas and Entry
Canada has specific entry requirements that vary by nationality and travel document. Do not rely on secondhand information. Check TravelerPulse's Visas section and the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website for current requirements before booking.
What to Pack
Vancouver's climate is famously mild but wet. Even in summer, a light waterproof jacket is advisable. Layering works well year-round. Comfortable walking shoes are useful since the neighbourhood is best explored on foot.
Practical Expectations
Hastings-Sunrise is a residential neighbourhood rather than a purpose-built visitor destination. Amenities are geared toward locals. Visitors should arrive expecting a genuine neighbourhood experience rather than a concentration of tourist infrastructure.
Getting There
By Air
The nearest airport is Vancouver International Airport (YVR), located in Richmond, approximately 20–30 minutes from Hastings-Sunrise by car depending on traffic. The Canada Line SkyTrain connects YVR to downtown Vancouver, from which you can transfer to buses serving the neighbourhood. Verify current transit connections with TransLink before travel.
By SkyTrain and Bus
Hastings-Sunrise is not directly served by a SkyTrain station, but multiple TransLink bus routes run along Hastings Street and serve the area. The Commercial–Broadway SkyTrain station (Expo and Millennium lines) is one of the more convenient nearby transit hubs. Check TransLink's trip planner at translink.ca for current route information.
By Car
The neighbourhood is accessible via Hastings Street and McGill Street and connects readily to Highway 1 via Burnaby. Street parking exists throughout the area, though availability varies. Note that parking regulations in Vancouver are actively enforced.
Getting Around
Hastings-Sunrise is walkable for most local errands and leisure, particularly along the Hastings Street commercial corridor. A bicycle is a practical option; Vancouver's cycling infrastructure has expanded in recent years, and the neighbourhood connects to broader bike routes.
For trips beyond the neighbourhood — to downtown Vancouver, the North Shore, or other districts — the TransLink bus network and SkyTrain system are the most practical public options. Rideshare services (Uber and Lyft operate in Metro Vancouver) and taxis are also available. Verify fares and availability locally.
Things to See & Do
Hastings Park
Hastings Park is the neighbourhood's main green space and anchor attraction. It contains walking paths, open lawns, a rose garden, and the Sanctuary — a quiet garden space near the site of a former wartime internment facility that now serves as a place of reflection. The park's history is layered and worth engaging with thoughtfully.
PNE and Playland
The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is one of Vancouver's largest annual events, typically held in late August. The site also hosts Playland, an amusement park that operates seasonally. Admission fees, ride availability, and seasonal operating hours change year to year — verify current details at pne.ca.
Hastings Street Commercial Strip
The stretch of Hastings Street through the neighbourhood supports a mix of independent businesses, cafés, bakeries, and ethnic grocery stores. It offers a ground-level window into everyday neighbourhood life without a staged tourist context.
Burnaby Mountain and the Velodrome
Just east of the neighbourhood, Burnaby offers additional outdoor and sporting amenities. The Burnaby Velodrome and Burnaby Mountain are short trips away and worth considering for active visitors.
Food & Drink
Hastings-Sunrise reflects Vancouver's multicultural composition in its food scene. Along Hastings Street and the surrounding blocks, visitors will find Vietnamese, Filipino, Chinese, Italian, and South Asian restaurants alongside newer independent cafés and bakeries.
The neighbourhood does not have a single concentrated dining district in the way that some Vancouver areas do (such as Commercial Drive or Robson Street), but food options are spread throughout and reward exploration on foot. Many spots are small, family-run businesses where quality and value can be high.
For specialty grocery shopping, the area has several Asian supermarkets and independent grocers that serve the local community. Visitors interested in self-catering or picking up local products will find good options within walking distance of most residential parts of the neighbourhood. Verify hours locally, as they can vary seasonally and by establishment.
Practical Information
Currency and Payments
The Canadian Dollar (CAD) is the currency. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted at most businesses. ATMs are available throughout the neighbourhood and along Hastings Street.
Tipping
Tipping is customary in Canada at sit-down restaurants, typically 15–20% before tax. Tipping for other services (taxis, hair salons) is also common practice.
Health and Pharmacies
Vancouver has a public healthcare system, but visitors from outside Canada typically require travel health insurance — verify your coverage before departure. Pharmacies (including major chains) are accessible in the area and in adjacent neighbourhoods.
Emergency Services
In Canada, dial 911 for police, fire, or medical emergencies. This is a universally applicable number throughout the country.
Connectivity
Wi-Fi is available at most cafés. Canadian SIM cards and data plans are available at airports and phone retailer stores; Canada's mobile data prices have historically been among the higher of OECD nations, so reviewing roaming options with your home provider before travel is worth doing.
Safety
Hastings-Sunrise is a generally safe residential neighbourhood. Visitors should exercise the same awareness they would in any urban area — be mindful of belongings in crowded spaces and keep valuables out of sight in parked vehicles.
The western edge of the neighbourhood borders the Downtown Eastside (DTES), one of Canada's most concentrated areas of poverty, homelessness, and open drug use. Visitors travelling on foot along Hastings Street toward downtown will transition through this area. It is not a place of danger for alert pedestrians, but it can be confronting and is a sensitive social environment — treat residents with the same dignity you would extend to anyone.
For non-emergency police matters in Vancouver, contact the Vancouver Police Department through their non-emergency line (verify the current number at vpd.ca). For emergencies, dial 911.
