Helsinki Vantaa punches well above its weight when it comes to airport dining, especially if you arrive with a little time to spare before your gate opens. The most rewarding stretch sits in Terminal 2, where you'll find a solid lineup of options ranging from the beloved Finnish chain Fazer Café — serving buttery cinnamon rolls and proper filter coffee — to sit-down restaurants offering reindeer dishes and Baltic salmon prepared with real care. It never feels like an afterthought.
For a genuine taste of Finland before you fly, seek out spots serving lohikeitto, the silky salmon and potato soup that locals genuinely eat at home, or a smoked reindeer open sandwich on dense rye bread. Karl Fazer Café is the standout for something quintessentially Finnish, while Gordon Ramsay's Plane Food outpost brings a more international polish to the departures lounge. Grab a Fazer blue chocolate bar at any kiosk — it's practically mandatory carry-on.
Terminal 1 is smaller and historically thinner on dining options, though recent years have seen it fill out with decent grab-and-go counters and a respectable coffee bar or two. If you're transiting through Schengen gates, you're well catered for with hot meals, fresh pastries, and Finnish dairy products that remind you exactly where you are. Prices are airport-level, naturally, but the quality gap between here and most European hubs is genuinely noticeable — in Helsinki's favour.
