The Essence of Venice Marco Polo Airport

Marco Polo Airport isn't exactly the first place you'd expect a genuinely satisfying Italian meal, but it surprises more than it disappoints. Airside in the main departure hall, a handful of cafes and bars serve proper espresso and cornetti that wouldn't embarrass a neighbourhood bar in Cannaregio. If you need something more substantial before your flight, Birreria Veneziana offers a rotating selection of local craft beers alongside cicchetti-style bites — that Venetian tradition of small, flavourful bar snacks — which feel refreshingly authentic for an airport setting.
For a sit-down meal, Ristorante Al Fontego sits landside near the check-in halls and leans into the region's seafood heritage with pasta dishes featuring vongole and scampi sourced from the northern Adriatic. It's a solid choice if you've arrived early or are picking someone up and want more than a panino. The menu reads with genuine Veneto pride — you'll find bigoli in salsa, the traditional whole-wheat pasta with anchovy and onion sauce, which alone makes it worth planning around if you love the local kitchen.
For a quick, no-fuss option, the food court area near the central atrium carries grab-and-go sandwiches, tramezzini, and decent slices of pizza bianca. It won't rival the bacari of Rialto, but the tramezzini — those soft, crustless triangles packed with tuna, egg, or prawn and mayo — are quintessentially Venetian and travel well if you're boarding in a hurry. Grab an Aperol Spritz from almost any bar in the terminal and suddenly the airport feels a little more like the city it's named after.
