Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is a major international airport serving the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, located approximately 26 miles west of downtown Washington in Loudoun and Fairfax counties, Virginia. It is one of three commercial airports serving the region, alongside Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The airport is owned and operated by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) and handles tens of millions of passengers annually. It serves as a primary hub for United Airlines and is a significant gateway for transatlantic and transpacific flights. Dulles is renowned for its iconic main terminal building, designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and completed in 1962. The distinctive swooping roofline is considered a landmark of modernist architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
