Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK/ZBAA) is the primary international airport serving Beijing, the capital of China. It is one of the busiest airports in the world by passenger traffic, consistently ranking among the top five globally, and serves as a major hub for both domestic and international aviation. The airport is located approximately 32 kilometers northeast of central Beijing in the Chaoyang District. It underwent significant expansion ahead of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics, with the opening of Terminal 3, designed by architect Norman Foster, which remains one of the largest airport terminal buildings in the world. Although Beijing now also operates Daxing International Airport (PKX), Capital International remains a critical hub for Air China and other major carriers, handling hundreds of millions of passengers over its operational history.

Terminals

The airport operates three terminals: Terminal 1 for select domestic flights, Terminal 2 for domestic and some international services, and the massive Terminal 3 serving Air China international routes and Star Alliance partners.

Getting to & from

The Airport Express rail line connects the airport to central Beijing in approximately 20 minutes, with taxi, bus, and shuttle services also available.

Beijing Capital International Airport is the busier of the two international airports serving Beijing, the capital city of China. The airport is located 32 km (20 mi) northeast of downtown Beijing, in an exclave of Chaoyang and the surroundings of that exclave in suburban Shunyi. The airport is owned and operated by the Beijing Capital International Airport Company Limited, a state-controlled company. The airport's IATA Airport code, PEK, is based on the city's former romanized name, Peking. The facility covers an area of 1,480 hectares of airport property. It was opened in 1958.
